Sylvester J. "Steve" Wittman (1904-1995) was one of the all-time greatest air racing pilots and raceplane designers. He also played an important role in the emergence of homebuilt aircraft in the United States.

January 30, 1998: Steve Wittman has just been elected to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. This significant recognition of Steve's accomplishments is long overdue. Steve now takes his rightful place beside other motorsports heroes such as A. J. Foyt, Richard Petty, Don Garlits, Mario Andretti, Parnelli Jones, and notable air racers Jimmy Doolittle and Roscoe Turner.
